Left hand drive. For the model year 1931, Lincoln finally retired the venerable Model L and brought forth the first of the now legendary Model K Lincolns. The Model L had been produced with only modest changes over the years since 1920 when the Lincoln marque first appeared. This long run was a testament to the genius of Henry Leland the founder and designer of the first Lincolns. But by 1930, the relatively short 136 inch wheelbase of the Model L was cramping the style of the custom body builders and the short hood was turning away buyers now seeking a longer, lower, more elegant look. Lincoln responded to this with a host of changes, most notably in size and power, sufficient to justify a whole new series designation. The magnificent Model K would be produced to the end of the decade and ring down Lincoln's role on the classic car stage in 1939. Wheelbase was extended to 145 inches and engine power was significantly increased to 120 bhp, most notably by introduction of dual downdraft carburetion. The addition of free wheeling permitted clutchless shifting and worm and roller steering eased handling. Seven body builders, including Lincoln's own shops, tempted buyers with some twenty-six body types and variations. Surely the Lincoln presented here is the most dashing four door model of the entire range. Construction of the Sport Phaeton body type was taken in-house by Lincoln in 1929 and the redesigned body has more room than its predecessors. Lincoln was considered by many to have the highest body quality standards in the industry and the custom builders were hard pressed to meet them. This car carries roll down quarter round wind windows in the front doors, a feature unique to Model K phaetons and touring cars. In 1931 Lincoln built only a highly limited number of these Sport Phaetons, 77 to be exact. This attractive example was purchased by Mr. Browning from longtime owner Mr. Harry King in 1972 and is one of the earliest cars to join the collection. The paint is quite presentable and shows only limited wear with some bubbling present on the hood. The engine bay, motor and underbody are equally presentable, though in used and maintained condition. The tan leather interior is fine with some wear on both the front and rear seats. This Sport Phaeton is fitted with C.M. Hall Depress Beam headlamps, sidemount spares with mirrors as well as a rear cigarette lighter, handrail and light. Additionally, the panel fit on this example is highly commendable with all doors closing well.
