A Victorian beaded circular salver on shell and scroll feet engraved with a broad frieze of rococo flowers and foliage, the centre engraved with a portrait of Charles Pitt, Tragedian, a presentation inscription from Robert Stanley, 1861, above, the reverse engraved: "R. Stanley and Co. Manufacturers, London" - 16in. Charles Pitt, a mid 19th Century actor/manager, was born in 1819 and died in February 1866 and 47. A Corpulent figure, he was celebrated for his interpretation of tragic Shakespearean roles, often in association with Salder's Wells Theatre. The Pitt family, a theatrical dynasty, flourished throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries. Sadly we have not been able to establish firmly whether Charles was a member of this family.
