Beschreibung:

Winter-1A. It is estimated that approximately 8,000 examples were struck using this reverse. Immensely popular with today's collectors, the 1839-D is not only the first quarter eagle issue from the Dahlonega Mint, but it is also the only one of the Classic Head design type. The location of the D mintmark on the obverse is also unique within the Dahlonega Mint quarter eagle series. This is an exceptional Choice AU example with an above average strike for a Dahlonega Mint gold coin. Lightly and evenly toned in khaki-gold, both sides retain ample satin-textured finish. Both sides show only extremely limited circulation. One tiny contact mark is mentioned to the right of the second S of STATES for future identification purposes only. Survivors from an original mintage of 13,674 pieces are typically offered in VF or XF grades, with an occasional lower end AU. In Choice AU, as here, the '39-D is a rare offering. This piece would make a great addition to an advanced Southern gold collection. (PCGS 7700)
