Always a popular as the first year of issue of from the Charlotte Mint, a facility whose coins are avidly collected. Also, it is one of only two Charlotte quarter eagles which use the Classic Head, Obverse Mintmark design. Considered by Doug Winter to be the 11th rarest date among the quarter eagles from this mint, and is usually seen only in VF and XF grades. It is rare in AU and very rare in Uncirculated. Rich orange-gold color overall with traces of mint luster in the protected recesses of the design elements. A small mint-made flan indentation is noted on Liberty's cheek, as is an almost invisible mark at the upper left corner of the shield. An especially appealing example featuring a typical strike for this Charlotte mint date. Even those having only a passing acquaintance with early date quarter eagles can rely on this piece to entice a strong bid. (PCGS 7697)
