Frederick Carder for Stevens & Williams Sterling Silver Deposit Glass Presentation Vase, England, 1902, silver depositing depicting roses on a dark green glass, cartouche inscribed "To my dear friend John Northwood 1st as a token of appreciation and esteem from Frederick C. Carder," two stamped marks "Sterling," ht. 13 1/4 in. Provenance: Ex-collection of Joan Callner Miller. Sold Bonhams (Los Angeles) April 4, 2007, lot 1023. Note: John Northwood (1836-1902) was the President of Stephens & Williams and an important cameo glass artist. In the late 1870s, he met the young Carder, encouraged his interest in glass making, and arranged for him to join Stevens & Williams as a designer. Carder presented this vase to Northwood as a "thank you" just prior to his emigration to Corning, New York where he founded Steuben Glass Works in the summer of 1903.
