Zoology.- Wolf (Joseph) Zoological Sketches, vol.1 only (of 2) in 2, plate vol. with tinted lithograph title, additional hand-coloured lithograph title and 50 plates, all chromolithographs or hand-coloured and mounted on card with captions beneath in gold, a few with foxing to mounts, both titles foxed, the first heavily so, text vol. with list of subscribers, occasional foxing, heavy at beginning and end, uniformly bound in contemporary green half morocco, gilt, over green pebbled cloth, spines gilt in compartments, g.e., [Nissen 1012; Anker 539; Wood p.633], folio (text 505 x 340mm., plates 571 x 415mm.), 1861. ⁂ A second volume, with a further 50 plates, was published in 1867. The list of subscribers includes John Gould (5 copies) and Lord Lilford. According to Sir Edwin Landseer Wolf was "without exception, the best all-round animal painter that ever lived." The subjects include monkeys, big cats, deer and antelope, and 17 birds.
