Venice [San Lazaro]: Mecharists, 1816. Oblong 2 o (362 x 467 mm). Engraved title and 7 engraved plates. Contemporary blue mottled-paper boards (some light wear to edges). Provenance : purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 1 October 1959. A rare production from the press of the Armenian monks on the island of San Lazaro near Venice. It shows the exact mathematical construction of the capitals of the 40 letters of the Armenian alphabet, which can be compared to and with Fanti's, Tory's and Dürer's construction of the Roman capitals. This is followed by 16 capital alphabets in several sizes and two flourished ones. The work is entirely engraved except for the letterpress text on fol. 3. Zohrabian was an erudite scholar of the Venice Mechitarist congregation, worked on the printing of the Bible for the first time in Armenian (1803), based on the authentic Armenian translation, and was a contributor to the Haigazian dictionary.
