NOTE: The stone is hard, immovable and silent while the bamboo is soft, mowing and rustling. They complement each other and, therefore, they are called "the bamoo gentleman and the stone friend" (zhujun shiyou). The artist said that the stone, which is "written" on this particular painting reminded him of a meditating monk in a bamboo grove.
