ZEPPELIN, Count FERDINAND VON (1837-1917). Photograph inscribed and signed ("Gr[af] Zeppelin"), n.p., n.d. [circa 1910]. 149 x 98 mm. (5 7/8 x 3 7/8 in.) image size, 224 x 165 mm. (8 13/16 x 6½ in.) including mount, minor repaired tear at right, some creasing, minor wear at corners. A shoulder-length portrait, inscribed on the lower portion of the image: "Herrn B. v. Woenke ... Erinnerung an die Spitzbergenfahrt mit dem Expeditionsschiff 'Mainz' im Sommer 1910. Gr Zeppelin." "A German army officer, his great role was as inventor of the first rigid airship in 1900. The type that bore his name went into transatlantic passenger service, but the crash of the Hindenberg in 1937 brought the end of the service and of the zeppelins"--W.M.
