YOUNGHUSBAND, Oswald (1833-1881). An album of twenty five sketches, seven double-page, of travels in Ecuador and Peru, 29 May 1863-January 1864, comprising: Plantains, Guayaquil; Guayaquil, Ecuador, 29 May 63; "Balsa" on the Guayaquil River, Ecuador, S.A. 29 May 63 from the steamer "Callao"; Sketch, town of Guayaquil 29 May 63 from the steamer "Callao"; On the Guayaquil River 29 May 63; "Balsa" Payta Peru 30 May 63; Chincha Islands, Peru From the North 6 June 63; Ballista Islands - South of the Chinchas 6 June 63; Quilca, Peru 8 June 63 7.AM.; Cross on summit of San André 3000 (3340) ft high. (9 x 12.8cm.) overall Oswald Younghusband (ownership inscription 'Oswald Younghusband Weymouth Dorset. 28. April 1863.' on the front pastedown), and thence by descent to the present owner. Younghusband was a Civil Engineer working on the railways, initially in England and from 1856 in Spain and Portugal. In 1863 he was appointed chief engineer in charge of surveys of the Islay and Arequipa railway in Peru and the present album includes sketches of Ecuador and Peru taken on his journey to Peru to take up his new position. He worked in Peru until 1868, on the construction and running of the Pisca and Yea, Iquique and La Noria railways, culminating in managing the Linia railways prior to leaving to work on the railways in the United States in 1869. For memoirs of his career see the Minutes and Proceedings (1881), Institute of Civil Engineers (Great Britain), 64, p.339.
