YOUNG, Sir Allen William (1827-1915). The Two Voyages of the 'Pandora' in 1875 and 1876 . London: Edward Stanford, 1879. The rare first edition intended for private circulation. Young describes voyages in 1875-76 to Lancaster and Smith Sounds in search of Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition, based on notes from his private journal. Young states in the preface that "at the suggestion of a few friends I have requested Mr. Stanford to publish it. The volume contains merely a simple record, or log, from notes in my private journal...." Young purchased the Pandora from his own funds for an expedition in search of Franklin's records. Includes additional topographical notes and discussion of Eskimos. Arctic Bib. 19759. Small quarto (242 x 180mm). 2 folding lithographic maps, printed in colors, in pockets at front and rear, 9 wood-engraved plates (Neatly repaired tears to maps, some marginal browning to plates). Original blue cloth, blocked in gilt and black (joints neatly repaired, spines somewhat soiled), custom chemise and morocco-backed cloth slip-case. Provenance : Mrs. A. M. Rodger, Perth – presented to Sandeman Public Library (presentation bookplate) – Andreas Zust (his sale, Christie’s 9 May 2002, lot 74).
