Aquatint frontispiece view of the Austrian Military School at Milan by Stucchi, engraved title by F. Meschede, 22 folding plates engraved in outline. Contemporary Milanese red straight-grained morocco gilt, profusely tooled in gilt with 'Etruscan'-style border, with large semi-circular diapered corners, the inner panel outlined with blind roll-tools, all surrounding the centrally-blocked arms of the Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla, flat-backed spine divided into seven compartments by roll-tools, lettered in one, the others decorated in gilt, gilt turn-ins, modern cloth box. Provenance : EMPRESS MARIE LOUISE (1791-1847, wife of Napoleon I, Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla, the arms with an escutcheon of pretence of Austria-Habsburg-Lorraine, binding). ONE OF THE FEW BOOKS FROM EMPRESS MARIE LOUISE'S LIBRARY WITH HER ARMS AS RULER OF THE THREE ITALIAN DUCHIES CONFERRED ON HER AT THE CONGRESS OF VIENNA: the majority of books bound for her library in Parma bore her initials surmounted by an imperial crown. On her death her books passed to her uncle, Archduke Rainer, Viceroy of Austria's possessions in Italy. The author was the Commandant of the Austrian Imperial and Royal Military School in Milan, this work (a compliation from earlier authors) was first published in Italian in 1825.
