He served in the Grenadier Guards during the war, and with his serviceman grant enrolled at Bournemouth College where he received a formal education in drawing, printmaking and painting. In 1950 he won a travelling scholarship to Rome and Florence. He resided in Cornwall for nearly thirty years.
