Lot details Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Each of rectangular form, finely carved in low and high relief, depicting monkeys, insects, and fruits on the eight lift-up markers, while a central scene portrays a larger monkey cautiously guarding a piece of fruit from two young monkeys. A whist marker is a device for recording the current score in the game of whist, they generally come in pairs, one for each couple and were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and very few tiny nicks along the edges. Provenance: Dutch collection.
