WYLD, James. Wyld's World in miniature; Heavens in miniature . London, 1839 (terrestrial)-1840 (celestial). A pair of terrestrial and celestial miniature table globes, diameter 3 ¼ inches (83mm), overall height 6 ½ inches (165mm). Each globe with two sets of 12 coloured lithographed gores, hand-coloured in outline, each with circular title cartouches, terrestrial showing the tracks of Cook's second and third voyages, the celestial without constellation figures (some minor restoration, small crack along terrestrial equator). Metal pinions, set in original brass half-meridian circles, on original baluster turned supports and turned bases. James Wyld the younger joined his father's map publishing business in 1830. His father pioneered lithography in map printing, while his son continued his important work, becoming Geographer to Queen Victoria in 1837. In globe manufacture he is remembered for his Model of the Earth, a globe with 6 foot diameter which stood in Leicester Square from 1853-61.
