WRANGEL (also VRANGEL), Fedinand Petrovich (1797-1870). Ocherk puti iz sitkhi v S. Peterburg. [Sketch of a Journey from Sitka to St. Petersburg.] St. Petersburg: N. Grech, 1836. The rare first edition of Wrangel’s account of his journey home after five years as chief administrator of the Russian colonies in North America. RBH and ABPC record no copy having been offered at auction. Wrangel returned to St. Petersburg from Sitka in 1835-36 via California, Vera Cruz (Mexico) and New York. “The description of Monterey and the San Carlos mission, as well as the general conditions in California during the ferment of 1820-40, is of considerably interest […] His description of New York is most interesting and complimentary” (Lada-Mocarski). Lada-Mocarski 102; Tourville 4968; Wickersham 6295. 12mo (162 x 102mm). (Title repaired in the inside margin, evenly darkened, and with some soiling; occasional light spotting in the text.) 19th-century quarter cloth (possibly re-cased; some soiling).
