CGC certified: Good- (1.8). Off-white pages. Cover: Norman Saunders. Stories and art: Sheldon Moldoff Bill Woolfolk, Tom McCarty, Maurice Gutwirth. "Eyes ripped out story" —Overstreet. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A 2.5 sold for $200 in 2016; a 3.0 sold for $1250 in December 2018. Norm Saunders' classic eyeball cover shows why horror mags were the "eye candy" of choice on the crowded newsracks of the pre-Code era. Unlike superheroes, westerns and other character-driven genres, horror mags dispensed with recurring characters and all of their narrative requirements, going straight for the jugular with over-the-top imagery. The emphasis on jarring visuals made horror mags impossible for kids to ignore: "They would stand around the magazine racks, pretending to browse, rushing through as many of the latest comics as they could before they were shooed away for loitering....'We all passed them around, like sacred objects, until they fell apart.'" — David Hadju, The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America. FSG: 2008, p. 37. A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact [email protected] . Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2022 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Find out why PBA is the new fan-fave of comics auctioneers. "This is some of the best commentary I've yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books... Priceless." — R. Crumb.
