Beschreibung:

McCudden, Major James Thomas Byford. 1895-1918. War Medal Certificate from the Aero Club of America. August 6th 1918. The official certificate for the award of the War Medal from the Aero Club of America, to the British flying Ace James McCudden, awarded posthumously after his death. The certificate with an elaborately engraved framed surround incorporating allegorical devices, the center (left blank), with a manuscript inscription, This is to certify that the War Medal of the Aero Club of America has been awarded to Captain James McCudden in recognition of valor and distinguished service this 6th Day of August 1918, No 42, signed by the Secretary and the President of the Aero Club. Engraved area, 395 x 575mm. (15.5 x 22.5 inches.) Framed and glazed. A fine War Medal certificate, just the 42nd to be issued by the Aero Club of America, and here given to a British pilot, who died on July 9th in Northern France, when his plane stalled on take-off. It is very much in the spirit of camaraderie between the French, British, and American Flyers, that the American Aero Club would honor an R.F.C. pilot, in this way, just 4 weeks after he died. McCudden, a British Flying Ace, was one of three brothers serving in the R.F.C., trained in 1916, and served in Northern France mostly with the 56th Squadron, flying a Sopwith Pup. Despite a time as an instructor back in England in 1916-17, he had 57 victories in his career, awarded 6 British medals, one French, and this American medal, making him the most highly decorated of all the British World War I pilots.
