WOOD, Sir William (1609-1691). The Bow-mans Glory; or, Archery revived. London: S. R., to be sold by Edward Gough, 1682. 2 parts in one volume, 8 (174 x 115mm). (Title slightly soiled, some waterstaining at lower margins of first part.) Contemporary dark brown morocco gilt, sides with double gilt fillet border and central panel formed of a double rule and roll-tool of flowers, the panel with outer and inner corner-pieces of large tulips and gillyflowers, gilt spine with tulip motif, gilt board and paper edges (extremities a little worn, spine delicate at head). Provenance : Edward Monk (early ownership inscription on title). FIRST EDITION IN ORNATE BINDING. The second part to this work is entitled 'A remembrance of the worthy shooting by the Duke of Shoreditch and his associates the worshipful Citizens of London upon Tuesday the 17th of September, 1583, by W. M.' One of the more important archery books to follow Roger Ascham's Toxophilus (1545), it is dedicated to Charles II, and begins with a poem 'In praise of Archery'. Three royal patents granting rights to archers are reprinted, and the description of the memorable tournament of 1583 is followed by 'A brief relation of the several appearances of archers since his majesties restauration'. Wood was for many years Marshal of the Finsbury Archers. He died on 4 September 1691, and at his burial three flights of whistling arrows, archer's honours, were discharged over his grave. Wing 3416. J[ohn] S[MITH]. The Compleat Fisher; or, The True Art of Angling. Being a clear and s [p] eedy way of taking all sorts of fresh-water fish with the worm, fly, paste, and other baits, in their proper seasons ... the fifth edition, enlarged . London: for G. Conyers, and J. & B. Sprint, 1725. 18 (110 x 55mm.) Woodcut frontispiece showing two anglers, woodcuts of fish in text. (Segment torn from outer margin of final leaf.) Contemporary sheep (restored). Provenance : C. Charles Horne (ownership inscription); William Keale Heseltine (bookplate); Denison Library (gilt bookplate). GOOD COPY OF A VERY ELUSIVE ANGLING BOOK, attributed to John Smith and first published in 1696 as The True Art of Angling . Westwood and Satchell record 12 issues up to 1770 and state: 'This minute work by an anonymous writer forms one of the marked features of most angling book collections, partly from its merits as a manual, but far more from its rarity, only a few copies of the earlier issues having escaped the wear and tear of time.'
