Title: Won in the Ninth: First in a Series of Stories for Boys on Sports to be Known as the Matty Books Author: Mathewson, Christy Place: New York Publisher: R.J. Bodmer Date: 1910 Description: [4], 298, [2] pp. Edited by W.W. Aulick. Illustrated by Felix Mahony including 8 plates; 6 plates from photographs at end (images on both sides) demonstrating "The fade-away and other deceptive curves as held and delivered by Christy Mathewson." 7½x4¾, green cloth, photo pictorial cover label, lettering in black. No. 255 of a limited issue. First Edition. Signed by Christy Mathewson on limitation label on front pastedown. The recipient's name is typed on the label, LeRoy Reeves, who designed the Tennessee State Flag adopted in 1905. Boys' book on baseball credited to the great New York Giants right-hander, winner of 373 games (tied for third on the all-time), and one of the "First Five" players inducted into the Hall of Fame, in 1936. Mathewson was mid-way through his career when this book was written (he went 27-9 in 1910 with an ERA of 1.89), so how much he contributed to the actual writing is up for conjecture; nonetheless, a rare baseball book, signed by one of the all time greats. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine faded with lettering gone, slight rubbing to cover label; vertical offset streak on each endpaper, near fine copy. Item number: 209363
