Tin, barrel-shaped ballot box in black japanned finish with stenciled bands, sunbursts, and gold lettering, which reads: Women's Ballots / Geo. D. Barnard & Co. / St. Louis, Mo. George D. Barnard & Co. was a manufacturer of office fixtures and equipment. The slotted, cast iron lid is fitted with a latch and wire bale handle. Measures 14.25 in. wide x 12.25 in. high x 12.5 in. deep. Ca 1860s-1870s. A woman's right to vote came along gradually and conditionally, and more often than not, women were restricted to voting on certain issues that men felt they had a vested interest in, such as the education of their children. At times, women were also made to use separate ballots and ballot boxes. Examples of the "Women's Ballots" boxes such as this are seldom seen and provide an unusual look at the history of the Suffrage Movement. Condition: The box shows a good amount of wear, with some denting along the rims and scattered scratches throughout.
