Hamilton, a Scottish sea captain in the service of the East India Company, traded as far as Japan, visiting, it is said, every port between the Cape and Canton. This work, the only source for information on Hamilton, provides an account of his experiences and is one of the most important first-hand histories of British merchant shipping in the Indian Ocean and East Indies.
