WISDEN, John. Cricketers' Almanack for 1870. London: John Wisden, 1870. 8° (154 x 94mm). Early 20th-century brown cloth, spine titled in gilt, red speckled edges.
WISDEN, John. Cricketers' Almanack for 1870. London: John Wisden, 1870. 8° (154 x 94mm). (Light spotting and a little paper adhesion to title, outer margin of title unevenly cut, further spotting mainly affecting preliminaries and end leaves, minor adhesion to verso of final leaf.) Early 20th-century brown cloth, spine titled in gilt, red speckled edges. Seventh edition. Although the wrappers have been removed from this copy, tiny fragments have been left adhering to the title and final page of text. The title was enhanced by a decorative border and freed from verbal clutter, allowing the name of John Wisden rather than Queen Victoria to shine forth. The routine addition of impartial match reports to the scores themselves became the almanac's key characteristic during this new decade. The price stayed at one shilling.
