Signed below: Jn: Russell, Edw: Winslow, [Rn:] Moon, Willm Molms and two other fragmentary signatures. Condition : some spots at head, lightly toned with creases and usual folds. An assessment of ‘ Oliver Saul of Penrise in ye County of Cornwall ’ for a £200 fine not yet received by the Comissioners for the Advance of Money. The Sawle family of Penrice, Cornwall had been one of the founding members of the county accompanying William the Conqueror and settling at the Manor of Tewington which is presently the town of St. Austell. Oliver Sawle (1601-1663), the assessed, inherited his father’s estate at the age of 36. He became Sheriff of Cornwall in 1663. an interesting document concerning an important figure in cornish history signed by pilgrim father edward winslow . Edward Winslow early Pilgrim father and leader on the Mayflower ship, is well known for his early writing on the colonies, beginning with “Good Newes from New England” or “A True Relation of Things very Remarkable in the Plantation of Plimouth.
