WILLIAMSON, Charles (1757-1808)]. Description of the Settlement of the Genessee Country, in the State of New-York. In a Series of Letters from a Gentleman to His Friend . New York: T. & J. Swords, 1799. 8 o (223 x 140 mm). Engraved folding map of the "Middle States of America." (Some pale spotting.) Contemporary floral wrappers, uncut (a few minor chips at edges, some losses to spine); blue quarter morocco slipcase. Second edition, copy on thick brownish paper, of the same work as in the preceding lot, Vail's third state of the map with the title in 7 lines, references and much additional geographical detail. The large map here similarly shows the Genessee lands in relation to the Atlantic Coast and Mid-Atlantic states though on a larger scale. This edition provides eight letters (versus five in the first) and, at end, a 2-page list of taverns on the road from Albany to Geneva and then on to Niagara. Vail also notes that copies were printed on thin white paper. Evans 36727; Howes W-493; Vail 1221.
