WILLIAM MARSDEN (1754-1836) The History of Sumatra, containing an account of the Government, Laws, Customs, and Manners of the Native Inhabitants, with a description of the natural productions, and a relation of the ancient political state of that island. M'Creery], 1810. Large 2° (527 x 405mm). Broadside 4° list of plates, 27 images on 19 plates of which 17 are stipple engravings and 2 are aquatints, each with 2 views. (Some marginal spotting.) Contemporary black half calf gilt, marbled boards (spine and corners chipped). FIRST ISSUE OF THE THIRD AND SOLE EDITION TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE FOLIO ATLAS OF PLATES. The 28 engravings plus map of the text include 8 plates printed in folio rather than quarto, for a grander representation of Sumatra's exotic botany. The 4 aquatint views after drawings by Wm. Bell of Fort Marlborough, Sumatra, are by Joseph Stadler, who also produced many of the spectacular aquatints for Ackermann's histories of colleges and Thornton's The Temple of Flora . A second issue of a third edition was published with the 28 plates in quarto bound in, as titled on the spine label. Haks & Maris, p.28, 252; Bastin & Brommer, p.2, 3. Notes 40, 42, 45. (2)
