Read more William Crozier Lot 3 - 'The Budding Bush (1985)' Estimate: €2,000 - €4,000 An energetic composition, with a tree spiralling upwards into the sky like a tornado, and a bush exploding in a riot of colour, The Budding Bush is an accomplished watercolour by one of Ireland's leading painters of the late twentieth century. Crozier's free and expressive use of watercolour is superb, particularly in the foreground, where patches of red enliven the greens and blues of the budding bush. Born in Troon, in Ayrshire, of Irish parents, Crozier studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1949 and 1953. Enjoying early success as a painter, as early as 1957 he was showing work at the ICA in London. He subsequently exhibited at the Drian and Tooth galleries during the 1960's, with considerable success. In 1973 Crozier bought a house and studio in West Cork, and became an Irish citizen. Over the following years he taught at the Winchester School of Art, while painting in Ireland for extended periods. In 1990-1991 the Crawford Art Gallery and RHA collaborated on a major retrospective exhibition, and the following year he was elected to Aosdána. Successful shows at the Taylor Galleries and William Jackson Gallery followed, as well as exhibitions at the Catherine Hammond Gallery. In 2018, the Irish Museum of Modern Art collaborated with the West Cork Arts Centre, in presenting "William Crozier: The Edge of the Landscape". Crozier died in 2011, aged eighty one.
