WILLIAM BEATTIE BOOTH (1804?-1874) & ALFRED CHANDLER (1804-1896) Illustrations and Descriptions of the plants which compose the natural order Camellieae, and of the varieties of Camellia Japonica, cultivated in the gardens of Great Britain. London: C.Baynes for John & Arthur Arch, 1831. Volume I (all published), 2 (365 x 260mm.) 40 hand-coloured engraved or lithographic plates by Watts or Weddell after Chandler, all heightened with gum arabic. (About 17 plates with gum arabic craquelure to foliage, a few plates shaved to within plate-mark. Contemporary olive half morocco gilt, morocco title label inset to upper cover, g.e. (joints, spine and corners neatly repaired). ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE OF ALL THE WORKS ON CAMELLIAS, IN ITS MOST DESIRABLE STATE, WITH "VERY FINE LARGE PLATES, BEAUTIFULLY COLOURED WITH OPAQUE PIGMENTS" (Dunthorne). "Handsome and rare" (Blunt). The plates are largely based on drawings made from plants in the collection of the nurserymen Messrs. Chandler of Vauxhall, of whom Alfred Chandler was the son. The work was issued with the plates in three states: uncoloured, coloured and coloured and highly finished. A second volume was in preparation but never appeared, although 4 plates with their accompanying text, numbered 41-44, do exist in a few copies.
