William Bache (American, 1771-1845). A pair of bust-length, hand-painted silhouettes of Dr. William Turner (American, 1775-1837) and his wife Mehitable Foster Turner (American, 1780-1853), done on paper with gouache highlights, each signed Bache l.c. and housed in period wood frames, one frame with reverse-painted glass, the other retaining an old cardboard backing labeled in ink script Wm. Turner / Surgeon U.S.A. / 1810, PLUS a similar pair of bust-length, hand-painted silhouettes of the same sitters, unsigned but labeled William Turner and Hette Foster Turner, respectively on the fronts and William Turner / Surgeon U.S.A. / 1810- / (Great-grandfather) and Hette Foster Turner / 1807 / (Great-grandmother), respectively on the backs, housed in round wooden frames, PLUS a hollow-cut silhouette of a young woman, most likely Mehitable Foster Turner, unsigned and labeled My Mother in pencil l.c., unframed, PLUS a reverse-painted silhouette of Dr. William Turner retaining an old label on verso and housed in a period frame; Bache examples dia. 3.5 in. (sight). Provenance: Descended in the Turner Family of Newport, RI Condition: Some toning and foxing to paper. Bache example of Mrs. Turner with a moisture stain. Hollow-cut example with folded corners and a small tear. One of the smaller round frames with a chip and a crack.
