The Picture of Dorian Gray.
London: Ward Lock and Co., 1891. Royal 8vo. ( 215 x 178 mm. 8 1/2 x 7 inches). Printed on Dutch hand-made paper, watermarked VanGelder. Original quarter parchment over rough grey bevelled boards, upper cover designed by Charles Ricketts with a design fifty-five gilt butterflies, spine lettered in gilt at base, t.e.g., rest uncut. Condition : Rebacked, retaining original spine with some restoration at extremities , light dust-soiling to deckle edges, spine browned, light rubbing to bevelled edges. first edition in book form, edition de luxe, limited to 250 copies numbered by hand and signed by wilde. The author's first novel, originally published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in July 1890. Six new chapters are added to this first appearance in book form, with many other additions and variations. Violently attacked by the critics when it appeared, this quintessential tale of decadence did Wilde a great deal of harm upon its publication. Mason 329.
