Wilberforce Eames' copy of Jefferson's Notes Philadelphia, 1794 JEFFERSON, Thomas (1743-1826). Notes on the State of Virginia. Philadelphia: Printed for Matthew Carey, 1794. Wilberforce Eames's rare thick-paper copy of the second American edition. The map which accompanies this edition was executed by Samuel Lewis and depicts Virginia in considerable detail. This edition includes three appendices: Charles Thomson's notes on Jefferson's text; Jefferson's "Draught of a Fundamental Constitution for the Commonwealth of Virginia," and "An Act for Establishing Religious Freedom." This copy was owned by Wilberforce Eames, Chief of the American Division at the New York Public Library and widely regarded as the dean of American bibliographers. Eames amassed a sizable private library, some of which was sold at Anderson Galleries in 1910 and 1911. Evans 27162; Howes J-78; Sabin 35898. Octavo (210 x 121mm).
