Karl Friedrich von Wiebeking (1762-1842), tax inspector for Darmstadt and chief hydraulic engineer for the Upper Rhine, was the author of numerous treatises on engineering and architecture, including a five-volume work on historical monuments dating from antiquity to modern times, as well as a gifted surveyor and cartographer. His extremely detailed maps, which evoke aerial views of the areas depicted, are models of exactitude, unrivalled at the time (in the title cartouche to the Holland-Utrecht map he proudly offers 500 Ducats to anyone who can show him a more accurate map of these two provinces).
