First edition (of the title work), the photographic frontispiece signed by Whitman together with his date of birth, one of about 100 copies according to BAL. Original three-quarters tan calf-backed orange cloth, all edges gilt. 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches (19 x 11.5 cm); 84, [2], 18 pp.; [2], x, [4], 68. [2] pp.; 120, [2] pp., with 2 pp. ads, corrections in Whitman's hand to page 60 of Democratic Vistas and p. 46 of Memoranda during the War ("written" to "witless"). The spine title label chipped with some loss of text, some wear and soiling, overall a sound copy externally; some separation along the guard of the photographic frontispiece, generally a clean copy internally. The first issue of this composite work, containing five parts (in addition to the title piece), including As a Strong Bird on Pinions Free and Passage to India with dated section titles. These, as BAL notes, are reprints, but the title work and most of "Centennial Songs" first appear here, and the sheets of "Memoranda during the War" were also probably first issued here. This collection differs from the reissue of the same year in having a two-line caption to the frontispiece photo. BAL 21411
