V.p.: v.d.:] c.1900. An interesting group of formal recollections, letters and informal sketches from various contributors, some signed and dated. Condition: some browning, edgewear, splits along folds. remembering whitman . Often sentimental and amusing, the letters paint a picture of knowing Whitman, for instance: JH Littlefield painted Walt Whitman in 1869 with his hat on. When it was finished Walt asked him, "What is the prevailing language of the picture? What's the upshot of it?" I told him what I thought of it and he said, "I'll tell what it says, it says what in Hell are you going to do about it!" [With:] An ink blotter, supposedly the last used by Whitman, bearing multiple signatures in reverse. Provenance: Horace Traubel.
