White Horse of Uffington.- Wise (Francis) A Letter to Dr. Mead concerning some Antiquities in Berkshire. particularly shewing that The White Horse, which gives it name to the Vale, is a Monument of the West-Saxons, 2 folding engraved plates by George Vertue Oxford, for Thomas Wood, 1738 bound with Wise (Francis) Further Observations upon the White Horse and other Antiquities in Berkshire, 3 engraved plates, of which one folding, occasional foxing, Oxford, for Thomas Wood, 1742; bound with 2 refutations of Wise's works by Asplin and North, occasional spotting, 19th century half calf, gilt, 4to ⁂ Francis Wise, Radcliffe librarian at Oxford and antiquary, undertook his own archaeological work on the White Horse of Uffington. His conclusion that it commemorated King Alfred's victory over the Danes in 871 was satirized in The Impertinence and imposture of modern antiquaries display'd by Philalethes Rusticus, 1739 (included here).
