[Western Territory] Author: [Kingsbury, Lt. J.P.] Place Published: Washington, D.C. Date Published: 1836-[1861] Description: Lithographed map. 25x43 cm (10x17") Reissue in American State Papers (1861) of the untitled 1836 map from "Report...of the Expedition of Dragoons, Under the Command of Colonel Henry Dodge, to the Rocky Mountains, during the Summer of 1835, &c." Across the center of the map in large letters is "Western Territory"; the lands assigned to various Indian tribes from the east are bounded in color, with unsettled tribes shown in the west. The "Route of the Dragoons under the command of Col. Dodge in 1835" is shown, and other features include Bent's Trading House, Pike's Peak, Santa Fe, the Platte River, etc. Wheat notes the legend at bottom, "Estimated distance 1645 miles, by Lieut. Steen, United States Dragoons," and lists the map under Steen. Condition: Old folds, faint marginal darkening, nick to lower left corner well away from map image; very good or better.
