WESTERN ASIATIC ACHAEMENID PHIALE 4th century BC A broad silver phiale or shallow bowl with repoussé fluting, central domed boss and ring of petals, flared rim. 429 grams, 22cm (8 3/4"). Footnotes The phiale was used in the Achaemenid empire for banqueting, which played an important role in society.They were also used for religious rituals where liquid was poured onto an altar as an offering to the gods; the religious use of these vessels passed into Greek culture, as well as later, to the Romans, where the phiale is known as a patera. The raised boss in the centre was to allow the fingers to support the bowl from underneath whilst drinking from or pouring a libation.
