WENING, Michael (artist, 1645-1718) and Ferdinand SCHÖNWETTER (compiler, d.1701). Historico-topographica Descriptio. Das ist Beschreibung des Churfrsten- und Herzogthums Ober- und Nidern Bayrn. Der Renntambt Mnchen. -Burghausen. -Landsht. -Straubing . Munich: Johann Lucas Straub, 1701-1726. 4 volumes, oblong 2° (301 x 383mm). Titles in red and black, engraved allegorical frontispiece to each volume, engraved map of Bavaria in volumes I and VI, and 627 engraved views by Wening, including 3 triple-sheet, 113 double-sheet, and 1 1 half-sheet engravings, type-ornament headpieces, woodcut tailpieces. (Lacking map in vols. II and III and 3-sheet view of Landshut in vol.III, vol.I frontispiece torn, small tears in several plates repaired on verso.) Contemporary calf, gilt spine in compartments, leather lettering-piece, marbled endpapers, red speckled edges (rubbed, some wear at extremities). Provenance : Johann Josef, Count Tauffkirchen (early bookplate in each volume). A FINE, FRESH SET of Wening's monumental topography of Bavaria, previously owned by a family whose Schloss features in the work. In his fine illustrations of the cities, towns, castles, monasteries and landscapes of Bavaria, Wening includes many details of daily life: the city centres are populated, the fountains in the princely gardens are running, and labourers are at their work. Wening, appointed court engraver in 1669, applied to Maximilian Emanuel, Duke of Bavaria, for a privilege for his proposed visual record of the four districts of Bavaria. It was granted, and Wening set off in 1696 to make his drawings; between November 1696 and January 1697 he had already completed 131 drawings. Wening did not always receive the welcome he thought his due by the Bavarian noblemen whose castles he was drawing, yet their annoying indifference seemed to inspire him to make his engravings even more spectacular in order to prove his artistry to them. The present set was owned by the counts Tauffkirchen, and Schloss Tauffkirchen is illustrated in two engravings. Singled out for special notice is the family's collection of antiquities, curiosities, and books. The library is described as filled with rare books in many languages, and is each year enlarged -- the present set would have been an appropriate and handsome addition to its shelves. The text of the Historico-topographica Descriptio was compiled principally by Ferdinand Schönwetter from a 15-point questionnaire which asked about place name, title, occupant, graves, monasteries, etc. The work was available in two formats, upright folio or oblong folio; the oblong folio format, as the present copy, shows off the plates to their best advantage. Volume I was the only one whose publication was completed during Wening's lifetime; when it appeared in 1701, its price was 18 Gulden. Cf. Michael Wening Der Kupferstecher der Max-Emanuel-Zeit . Exhibition catalogue. Munich: Stadtmuseum, 1977. (4)
