Wellington] - Campaigns of the field-marshal His Grace, the most noble Arthur, Duke of Wellington ; Knight of the most noble Order of the Garter (...). Embellished with twenty-four elegant engravings, and a superb equestrian portrait of His Grace (...) by J. Duplessi Bertaux . Paris, Didot Sr for Galignani and sold in London by Booth, Egerton, Longman etc., c. 1817, folio, gilt mottled calf, gilt double ornamental borders on covers (sl. def. on corners), flat gilt orn. spine (joints rubbed), red leather title label, marbl. endpapers, silk marker, text and 25 pl. (some marg. waterstains esp. in last quires, browning to text in 2nd half, due to paper/ink quality). Good copy with wide margins.
Extr. rare beautiful work on the Post-Peninsular War (military conflict between Napoleon's empire and the allied powers of Spain, Britain and Portugal for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars in 1807–1814). Engr. ills : portrait of Wellington dated 1817 and 24 pl. with French and English captions, each one accompanied by a French and English explanatory text of 4, 6 or 8 pp. The pl. glorify the victories of the Duke of Wellington, commander of the allied forces, and depicts a view of a battle in India, Portugal, Spain, France and Belgium, as well as the Duke's entry into Madrid and Paris. Ownership entry on t.-p. Bookplate F.M.H. Ouwerling .
