WELLINGTON, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of (1769-1852). Autograph letter signed ('Arthur Wellesley') to Lieutenant Goodlad, Seringapatam, 15 February 1800, 2 pages, 4to ; with a related envelope. An early letter of scarcely-veiled impatience: Lt Goodlad has for the second time forwarded to Wellington a letter from his father, asking that Wellington recommend Goodlad for promotion, 'not in the 33rd regt (in the promotion of which Corps alone I have any business to interfere) not in the Army in this country, but in the Army in Europe with which the Com[mander]-in-Chief has nothing to do. I certainly conceive your situation to be a hard one. You are one of the oldest Lieutenants in the Army, and yet low in your own regt ... I shall not conceal from you my opinion that you are deserving of promotion', but declaring it out of his power to do anything to help. Having captured Tipoo Sultan's capital of Seringapatam at the head of his own 33rd regiment and a force loaned by the Nizam of Hyderabad, Wellington was in 1800 acting governor of the city. Lt Goodlad was later to come to Wellington's attention for drunkenness.
