WEIZMANN, Chaim Azriel (1874-1952). I. Elektrolytische Reduktion von 1-Nitroanthrachinon. II. Ueber die Kondensation von Phenanthrenchion u. 1-Nitroanthrachinon mit einigen Phenolen. Inaugural-Dissertation ... zur Erlangung der Doktorwürde . Bern: Henri Boneff, 1899. 8° (199 x 133mm). Original printed grey wrappers. EXTREMELY RARE COPY OF THE DOCTORAL DISSERTATION OF THE FUTURE FIRST PRESIDENT OF ISRAEL. Born at Motol, near Pinsk, Belorussia, Weizmann completed his higher education, first at the polytechnics at Darmstadt and Charlottenberg, Berlin, specializing in organic chemistry, finally receiving his doctorate at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Subsequently, Weizmann spent a few years at the University of Geneva before moving to Manchester, where he discovered the method for producing acetone by fermentation. This would prove to be an essential contribution to the British war effort during World War I. Weizmann initally met Arthur Balfour during an election rally in the Prime Minister's Manchester East constituency in 1906. By the time Balfour was installed as Foreign Secretary in Lloyd George's cabinet of 1916, Weizmann's scientific work had realized significant side-effects, 'bring[ing] him into closer and more cordial relations with leading politicians and senior civil servants' (ODNB). Balfour would make his famous Declaration in 1917.
