WEIRD SCIENCE No. 18 Publisher: EC [Indicia: Fables Publishing Co., Inc.] Date Published: March-April, 1953 Description: VG+ (4.5). Slight spine curve, cover reds faded, vertical crease, 1/4" split to bottom spine, pencil mark to "W" in "WEIRD," a few small edge nicks, slight corner wear. Off-white pages. Cover: Wally Wood. Plots and scripts: Bill Gaines and Al Feldstein Art: Wally Wood, Al Williamson, Jack Kamen Joe Orlando. Feldstein-Wood adaptation of Ray Bradbury's "Mars is Heaven!". GPAnalysis: A 4.5 sold for $750 in 12/22 (an anomalous result; a 5.0 sold for $328 in 9/22). This ish contains "Mars Is Heaven!," the second of Wally Wood's two Ray Bradbury adaptations (the first was "There Will Come Soft Rains," published in Weird Fantasy #17, Jan.-Feb., 1953). Both stories stand out as high points in Wood's EC oeuvre. Other EC artists tasked with adapting Bradbury's stories had a passing familiarity with the original stories at best (Al Williamson and Joe Orlando admitted to never reading Bradbury's stories before illustrating them). Wood, on the other hand, was a Bradbury fan from the start, and his familiarity with the source material may have spurred him on to greater efforts. WOOD: "I had read those stories some time before [adapting them]. And I must say they were very good adaptations.... I did a lot of research for that story 'There Will Come Soft Rains'.... I probably worked harder on that story than anything I ever did. I did a fair amount of research on 'Mars Is Heaven.' I wanted it to have that period look of that time, you know, the decorating..." — John Benson interview with Wood, quoted in the annotations to Russ Cochran's The Complete Weird Science, 1st edition, 1981.
