Beschreibung:

Watercolor, 8.25 x 12.75 in., on 10.5 x 14 in. board. With manacle (finger pointing) and inked note below, which reads "My tent just over the chimney: at the foot on the hill." Although no further information is known about the scene, it appears to be an artillery park with permanent wooden or batten barracks buildings and central garrison flag on distinctive military style mast-pole. The further (geographically) west one would travel at this time, the less likely it would be to see a post with brass artillery pieces (not to scale?) much less a large quantity of broken spoke wheels. The single soldier on guard duty wearing the taller shako could be interpreted as a (foot) artilleryman as regulations (in the 1840s) called for that branch of service to wear the shako even for field service. Infantry and cavalry had gone to the M1839 soft cap. The tall shako was finally discontinued for regular infantry full dress occasions by 1858 although eastern militia wore them until the eve of the Civil War. Considering the terrain depicted in the rendering, this watercolor may somehow relate to the Mexican War. Condition: Some wear, creasing, folds (with separations that were reinforced when piece was mounted on board). Some loss along edges, corners.
