WASHINGTON, George, President. Partly printed document signed ("G: oWashington") as Commander-in-Chief, Continental Army, counter-signed by Philip Van Cortlandt (1749-1831), and Jonathan Trumbull, Jr. (1740-1809), Headquarters [New Windsor, N.Y.], 9 June 1783. 1½ pages (recto and verso of single sheet), folio (335 x 210 mm.), small losses at fold intersections, catching part of the "s" in signature, minor soiling, part of the sheet backed. WASHINGTON GRANTS AN HONORABLE DISCHARGE to John Reed, a soldier in the Second New York Regiment, who had "faithfully served in the United States Six Years and five months." The discharge is dated the same day as Washington's famous letter to the states announcing his retirement, since the "great object," independence, had been realized at last (even though the final peace treaty had not yet been signed in Paris). A better than average example of a document often found in deplorable condition. The Second New York Regiment, organized in June 1775, had seen long service, fighting in the Canada Invasion, the New York campaigns, Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, Monmouth Court House, against the Iroquois in 1779 and at Yorktown.
