WASHINGTON, GEORGE, President Autograph cover sheet (letter not present) addressed in Washington's hand to "Wakelin Welch Esqr & Son Merchants London," no date [between 1783 and 1790, probably 1786], no postmarks (probably hand carried), slight stains from old mounting along one extreme edge of sheet, otherwise in very fine condition. At least six letters from Washington to Wakelin Welch & Son, a firm of merchants, are extant, ranging in date from 1788 to 1790, and an additional seven letters are recorded, addressed to the firm of Wakelin Welch between 1783 and March 1790. A pencilled note on the back of the present cover dates it 1786. Four letters of that year are known from Washington's letterbook copies. From the firm, Washington ordered such diverse merchandise as seeds and plows, a terrestial globe "of the largest dimensions," champagne, Bordeaux and claret wine, "plated coolers, mirrors and table ornaments" and, on 28 November 1785, a "handsome and fashionable gold watch" for Martha Washington "such as are worn at present by ladies in genteel life."
