Wayne, 1804-07. 5 vols., large 8vo, 210 x 130mm. (8 x 5.3/8 in.), plus Atlas, 272 x 228mm. (10 x 9 in.), text vols.: contemporary American mottled calf, flat spines with gilt-lettered red morocco label (joints and extremities rubbed, moderate foxing, more severe at beginning of vol.1 and end of vol.5); Atlas: contemporary half calf and marbled boards (spine renewed, preserving original morocco label), engraved bookplate of Harvard College by N. Hurd (see Allen, American Bookplates , 352). Maps on guards, a few with minor cockling of paper and discreet repairs, moderate foxing. FIRST EDITION of Marshall's fundamental biography of Washington, compiled partly from the late President's papers in the possession of his nephew, Bushrod. Engraved frontispiece portrait in vol.1, atlas with 10 engraved maps (8 double-page, one folding) by J. Vallance, F. Shallus and others; 22-page subscriber's list in atlas. A SUBSCRIBER'S COPY, BOLDLY SIGNED WITH FLOURISH ON TITLEPAGES OF EACH TEXT VOL. BY WILLIAM ELLERY, JR., son of the Rhode Island Signer (1727-1820); both father and son are named in the printed subscriber's list. Howes M317; Sabin 44788. An excellent subscriber's copy of the American first edition, in original binding, with a distinguished American provenance. The London reprints are much more frequently encountered and many sets have been rebound or extra-illustrated. (6)
