WASHINGTON, George. Engraved document signed ("Go: Washington") as President, countersigned by Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State and WILLIAM ELLERY (Signer of the Declaration of Independence), with flourish. Accomplished in Newport, R.I., 9 December 1796. 1 page, large folio (18 1/2 X 12 in.), ON PARCHMENT, finely engraved text at top, "By the President of the United States," beneath a very large engraved vignette (5 1/2 X 11 1/4) of a light-house on a rocky inlet with two sailing ships (one flying a large American flag) and a distant harbor with setting sun in the background, scalloped edge at top, accomplished in manuscript, papered seal of the United States at lower left, apparently cancelled with a circular punch very slightly affecting 3 letters in Washington's signature, otherwise in excellent condition. A ship's passport for the ship "Patty of Bristol."
