lot of 12 items. Includes three militia appointments, all partially printed documents for William McCobb: the earliest as Sergeant of a Company in the 1st Regt., 1st Brigade, 11th Div. of the MA Militia, and signed by another McCobb, commanding the 11th Div., 10 May 1811; second as Sergeant of a Company of Infantry in the 2d Brigade, 11th Div, 21 July 1812 [just a bit more than a month after the declaration of war], and the third as Lieut. of a Company in a Battery of artillery, 2nd Brig., 11th Div. Also included is a fair copy of the orders to create a company of artillery within the 2d Brig. of the 11th Div. and a roster of the 41 men who volunteered to serve in the new company, including William, Ephraim and Andrew McCobb. The new company was formed 2 June 1813 and charged with protecting the sea coast at Boothbay. There is a Department Order dated 14 Apr(?) 1814, sending McCobb's company to Edgcomb. The archive includes 6 morning reports for September 1814 [14, 17, 22, 27, 28 (2 by different Officers of the Guard)]. The last item is a receipt for $18 from the militia to McCobb's unit. The War of 1812 has been termed, besides the "Forgotten War," the "Second War of Independence." Although attempts at American expansion into Canada failed, so did British attempts to capture New Orleans and Baltimore. One of the contributing factors in the war was the impressment of American sailors into British naval service in their ongoing war with France. The infant nation feared the British Navy, which ruled the seas at the time, so these defenses of the coast were critical, even though there is no indication that they saw action. One of the military appointments was signed at Bath, another at Boothbay, the morning reports are all from Edgcomb. Today, this region is in Maine, which was then a part of Massachusetts. The lack of support that the southern part of Massachusetts (where the large cities such as Boston were) gave to the northern part (rural) was a contributing factor in Maine becoming a separate state, but Mass. clearly did mount some coastal defensives of her northern extension in 1812 - 1814. Condition: Paper as expected or better - light toning and foxing, folds. Ink still readable (not so the handwriting in all cases).
