WALTON, George (1749 -1804), Signer (Georgia). Autograph letter signed ("GeoWalton") as Judge of the State Superior Court, to "His Excellency the Governor" (probably Governor Edward Telfair of Georgia), Augusta, 2 February 1791. 1 page, oblong, neatly inlaid to a larger sheet .
GOVERNOR TO GOVERNOR: WALTON'S SALARY AS JUDGE. An attractive, relatively rare ALS of this Georgia Signer. After a long career as legislator in various jurisdictions, Walton served in the post of Governor in the crucial years 1789-1790. When a new state Constitution was drafted, he retired to sit on the bench of the State Superior Court. Telfair had succeeded Walton as Governor. Here, Walton assigns part of his salary to another: "Please to take order for the payment of my Second Quarter's salary to Mr. Andrew Innis, or Order, say [£87. 10s.], when the same shall become due, as one of the Judges. I am, Sir, your Obedient servant Geo Walton." Georgia's politics were notably contentious during the Revolution and Walton became a factional rival and adversary of fellow Signer Button Gwinnett, killed in a duel with Walton's ally, General Lachlan McIntosh in May 1777.
