WALL STREET - THEODORE ROOSEVELT'S COPY] History of the New York Stock Exchange and the New York and London Clearing House Systems . New York: Published by the Financier, [1887]. Signed on the front blank by Theodore Roosevelt. Publisher's gilt decorated cloth, housed in custom folding cloth case. 10 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches (27 x 20 cm); 189 pp., a few plates. The covers worn, shaken with both front hinges cracked, the final ad leaf before text split at gutter and nearly detached, clean within. A fine financial association between Wall Street and Roosevelt, who at the time of this publication was appointed to the United States Civil Service Commission and was later New York City Police Commissioner. This History of Wall Street comes just before the 1890 Sherman Anti-Trust Act, which Roosevelt would uphold once President - and it was Roosevelt who coined the phrase "muckraker" for a politician willing to take on big business. C From the Collection of John E. Herzog
